Kisumu, Kenya, September 28, 2024: In an inspiring story of resilience and hope, Mr. Bob Richard , a long-time patient battling a low heartbeat, finally received the life-saving surgery he so desperately needed. Due to financial constraints, he had been unable to afford the essential pacemaker procedure. However, this September, during a routine check-up, he received life-changing news—Aga Khan Hospital was offering free pacemaker surgeries to patients in honour of World Heart Day. This generous initiative provided Mr. Bob with the care he had been waiting for, bringing renewed hope to his life.
Embracing the opportunity, Mr. Bob underwent the pacemaker procedure at Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu. Post-surgery, his relief and joy were evident as he spoke about the remarkable improvement in his health. “I can’t believe how much stronger I am now. This surgery has truly given me a new lease on life,” he shared, his gratitude shining through in every word.
This initiative provided free pacemaker surgeries to eight patients, including individuals from Migori, Eldoret, Maseno, and Kisumu. It was part of Aga Khan Hospital’s broader mission to give back to the community and support those in need. The patients were carefully selected through a thorough screening process, ensuring that those who required the surgery most but faced financial barriers received this life-saving treatment.
Dr. Chebet Chepkyony’, a consultant cardiologist, together with Dr. Nathan Ruhamia and a skilled team of doctors from Aga Khan University Hospital, led the surgeries. Their exceptional dedication and expertise were crucial to the success of the procedures, creating a lasting impact on the lives of the patients and their families.

The Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu was established in 1952 as a private, not-for-profit institution that provides primary, and secondary level health care services in Kenya.
