Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu Partners with Homa Bay County Government to Launch East Africa Comprehensive Cancer Project

Kisumu June 4th, 2025: The Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu (AKHK), signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the County Government of Homa Bay to launch the East Africa Comprehensive Cancer Project (EA-CCP).

The donor-funded initiative aims to transform cancer care across Homa Bay County and it’s surrounding regions.  Implemented by AKH,K the project will focus on upgrading medical equipment, engaging key stakeholders, and building capacity in critical areas such as cancer  screening, vaccination, and treatment – particularly for breast and cervical cancer.

Guided by the MoU, the partnership seeks to significantly enhance the quality, accessibility, and capacity of cancer services within the county.  It is expected to deliver lasting benefits, not only for Homa Bay County but also for the broader East Africa region.

The signing ceremony was attended by Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga; Jane Wanyama, CEO of Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu; and Anne-Gaël Chapuis, Country Director of the French Development Agency (AFD) in Kenya.  Their participation underscores the strong leadership and collaboration, and collective commitment driving this transformative health initiative.

This partnership marks a vital step towards achieving better cancer outcomes and advancing health equity across the region.

 

About The Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu

The Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu was established in 1952 as a private, not for profit institution that provides primary, secondary, and tertiary level health care services in Kenya. In 2019, the hospital was awarded SafeCare Level 5 Certification and is part of the AKDN Health System in eight countries, which provides community health programmes covering over 200 health facilities, including 22 hospitals.

The recent expansion to a new ultra-modern building transformed the previous 70-bed facility into a leading 123 bed secondary hospital, offering some tertiary care services that provides integrated health care for people in the Western region and rest of Kenya. The hospital currently serves over 14 counties in the lake region bloc and even receives patients from Uganda and Tanzania. The hospital has become a hub of qualified doctors and nurses.

The Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu provides general medical services, specialist clinics and state of the art diagnostic services.
