MOMBASA, KENYA, 30 April 2024 – Aga Khan Health Service, Kenya, announced today, the successful conclusion of its renovation of the Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa. This achievement signifies a crucial advancement in our enduring dedication to delivering top-tier healthcare to a population base of approximately 1.4 million people. Through this extensive renovation, the previously 82-bed facility has evolved into a cutting-edge 115-bed secondary hospital equipped to deliver comprehensive and integrated health services to the surrounding communities.
The renovation project represents a total investment of US$12.2 Million, comprised of a loan of US$8.54 million from Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and additional funding of US$3.68 million from the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest, CECM Health, Mombasa County Dr. Swabah Ahmed, said “I wish to state that one of the strongest areas of collaboration is on consultants from the DoH practising in the private sector. This level of partnership has been there for a very long time. As a department, we have no intention to make fundamental changes, except to state that we need to regularize and streamline this partnership in order to optimize our human resources to provide quality healthcare to our patients in the public facilities”.
Speaking at the event, His Excellency Arnaud Suquet, Ambassador of the French Republic to Kenya said, “Thanks to AFD and AKDN’s financing, this project will contribute to better accessibility healthcare, including availing health care closer to the communities through the primary health centres, 09 of which were financed in this AFD support, but also to avail improved clinical programs, including maternal health”.
The newly renovated Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa is poised to provide enhanced healthcare services to the people of the Coastal Region and Kenya at large. The facility now features a dedicated Accidents and Emergency Unit, a larger Intensive Care Unit, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a High Dependency Unit (HDU) and an Isolation Ward. Holding Level 5 certification from SafeCare Healthcare Standards, the hospital is well-equipped to offer specialised care in cardiology, nephrology, oncology, neurology, psychiatry, advanced surgeries, and more. This development underscores Aga Khan Health Service, Kenya’s commitment to advancing healthcare accessibility and delivering comprehensive, high-quality services to the community.

Aga Khan Health Service, Kenya established a 4-Bed Maternity Home in 1944, which was later upgraded to 16 beds in 1952. The Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa was established in 1952 as a private, not-for-profit institution that provides primary, and secondary level health care services in Kenya. In 2019, the hospital was awarded SafeCare Level 5 Certification, expanding to the SafeCare certification of 8 of its 15 Outreach Health Centres. The Aga Khan Hospital provides general medical services, specialist clinics and state-of-the-art diagnostic services. It is also part of the Aga Khan Health Services international network, with links to the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi and the Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi.
