Advancing Healthcare: Aga Khan Hospital Enhances Nursing Excellence for a Healthier Community

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania October 18, 2024: The Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam, is proud to announce significant advancements in patient care following specialized training undertaken by our nursing staff. Over the past 10 months, our nurses have participated in comprehensive programmes focused on oncology nursing and lactation consultancy, ensuring our community receives the highest quality of care.

In response to the increasing demand for specialized cancer care and the opening of our state-of-the-art Cancer Care Centre, Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania recognized the need for professional training for our nurses. This training equipped them with essential knowledge in cancer pathology, treatment modalities, and symptom management. With these advanced skills, our oncology nurses are now better prepared to support patients throughout their cancer journey, from diagnosis to recovery. They provide not only clinical expertise but also compassionate emotional support, helping patients and their families navigate the complexities of cancer treatment.

Simultaneously, another group of nurses has completed a year-long Consultant Lactation Course, earning certification as lactation consultants. This training is particularly significant as lactation specialist nurses are few in the country, making this expertise vital for maternal and infant health. Given the rising number of newborns and new mothers, our nurses are now equipped to support breastfeeding mothers effectively. They address common breastfeeding challenges, promote successful breastfeeding practices, and foster healthy outcomes for both mothers and infants. This initiative contributes to increased breastfeeding success rates and greater maternal confidence, ultimately benefiting families in our community.

The specialized training our nursing staff has received directly translates to improved patient care at Aga Khan Hospital. Oncology patients now benefit from a team of knowledgeable nurses committed to providing evidence-based, compassionate care. New mothers receive expert breastfeeding support, ensuring a positive start to their parenting journey.

Aika Mongi, Director of Nursing at Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania, emphasized, “Our ongoing investment in nursing education aligns with our mission to deliver the highest standard of healthcare in our community. As we continue to prioritize professional development, we are dedicated to ensuring that all patients receive the best possible care from our highly skilled nursing team.”
