Dar es Salaam, December 05, 2025 — The Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam proudly received the AMR Champion Award at the 7th Africa Continental World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW) Scientific Conference, held from 2–6 December 2025. This distinguished recognition reflects the hospital’s continued leadership and meaningful contributions toward advancing Tanzania’s National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).
Held under the theme “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future,” the conference brought together leading scientists, policymakers, and health professionals from across the continent to strengthen the One Health approach to AMR. The conversations emphasised the need for practical, cross-sector collaboration across human, animal, plant, and environmental health to address the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance in Africa.
Dr. Samina Somji, Director of Post Graduate Medical Education at Aga Khan University, Dar es Salaam College and Infectious Disease Specialist at the Aga Khan Hospital, received the award on behalf of the institution. Dr. Somji was honoured by His Excellency, the Vice President and the Minister of Health of Tanzania and was also selected to deliver an oral presentation on her research, examining the risk factors and clinical outcomes of hospitalised patients with multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) infections in a tertiary hospital in Tanzania. Her contribution reflects strong leadership in advancing national efforts to prevent and control AMR and MDROs.
