Dar es Salaam, December 01, 2025 — The Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam (AKH,D) has been recognised among the Top Ten Laboratories in Africa for Immunoassay performance by the Randox International Quality Assessment Scheme (RIQAS) — one of the world’s largest External Quality Assessment (EQA) programs, covering more than 10,000 laboratories in 150 countries.

This recognition honours more than technical excellence — it underscores our commitment to providing patients across Tanzania and the world with test results that meet the highest international standards. From diagnosis to treatment, accurate and reliable results are essential for safe, timely, and effective care.

Alongside this award, the hospital also received SADCAS ISO 15189:2022 accreditation under the new ISO standard and protocols, which place greater emphasis on mitigating clinical risk and patient-centred outcomes. Together, these achievements reinforce AKH,D and the broader Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania’s role in setting the standards for medical excellence in Tanzania and beyond.

“This achievement is not only a milestone for our hospital but also for the country,” said Mr. Sisawo Konteh, Chief Executive Officer of Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHS,T). “It shows that AKHS,T is not only leading the continent in laboratory standards, patient safety, and innovation, but is also an international leader in the field. Our ongoing commitment is to ensure that every patient, whether here in Dar es Salaam or across East Africa and Africa, receives care rooted in excellence, trust and sustainability.”

Presenting the award, Ms. Regina Ngulwa, a Randox Representative in Tanzania, emphasized the significance of this accomplishment, noting that “external quality assessment is about accountability and continuous improvement. By consistently achieving top performance, Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam, continues to demonstrate its dedication to quality results and patient safety. It is these qualities that inspire confidence locally and internationally.”

For the laboratory team, the recognition is also deeply personal. Dr. Caroline Ngimba, Head of Pathology at AKH, D, noted, “every accurate result represents a life guided toward the right clinical decision and treatment. This award reflects the hard work of our laboratory professionals and their commitment to serving patients with precision and compassion.”

As the only Joint Commission International (JCI)-accredited hospital in Tanzania, Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam continues to raise the bar for excellence in diagnostics and healthcare delivery, contributing to stronger health systems nationally, continentally, and globally.
