The Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam Receives JCI Accreditation for the Fourth Time, Reinforcing Commitment to Healthcare Excellence

Dar es Salaam | 2025 — Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam (AKH-D) has once again reaffirmed its position as a national and regional leader in healthcare quality and patient safety after receiving the Gold Seal of Approval from Joint Commission International (JCI), USA, for the fourth time. JCI accreditation represents the highest global benchmark for safe, effective, and patient-centred care, and AKH-D remains the only hospital in Tanzania to hold this prestigious distinction.

This fourth consecutive accreditation underscores the Hospital’s relentless commitment to excellence and continuous improvement. Notably, the entire accreditation assessment was conducted fully virtually, marking a significant achievement that demonstrates the Hospital’s strong digital readiness and ability to meet rigorous international standards through remote evaluation. During this year’s review, the Hospital was praised for the strength of its clinical governance, operational systems, and culture of quality care.

Beyond formal scoring, the JCI assessment panel commended AKH-D for several areas of excellence that extend beyond JCI’s measurable standards. Surveyors highlighted the Hospital’s exemplary change management practices, citing the seamless transition to a fully integrated Electronic Health Record (EHR) system completed in just two months — a transformation described as remarkable in both speed and execution. The panel emphasized that these achievements reflect not only technical capacity, but also organisational discipline, staff engagement, and a shared commitment to innovation that continuously strengthens patient care.

Receiving JCI accreditation for the fourth time is a testament to the dedication of the Hospital’s clinicians, nurses, administrators, and support teams, who work each day to uphold international standards while advancing patient-centred, compassionate care for communities across Tanzania. It also reflects the ongoing investment of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in strengthening health systems and expanding access to high-quality services across the region.

Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam remains deeply committed to advancing quality, expanding specialised services, and embracing innovation as it continues to deliver world-class healthcare and set new benchmarks for excellence in Tanzania and beyond.
